All You Need To Know About Met Gala 2024
The Met Gala 2024 will take place this evening in New York. This year’s theme is ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion’. The dress-code for the much feted event is ‘The Garden Of Time’ the same name as the J.G. Billard book.
The Met Gala is fashion’s biggest night. It is called the Superbowl of fashion. In general red carpets usually boast of fashion that flatters but the Met Gala red carpet is the one red carpet that allows for purely directional fashion. Co-chairs with Anna Wintour this year include JLo, Zendaya, Chris Hemsworth and Bad Bunny. The red carpet presenters are Lala , Gwendoline Christie and Emma Chamberlain.
The ‘Sleeping Beauties’ theme refers to the designs in the Met Museum’s collection that will be on display in this year’s exhibition that are too fragile to display in the usual way of hanging them up. These will be displayed (‘reawakened’ as it were) in other ways in multi-sensory ways using AI, CGI and video animation. This theme and the dress code of ‘The Garden Of Time’ will present a multitude of ways that Meta Gala attendees can interpret what they wear on the red carpet. From wearing archival looks to the more obvious choice of being bedecked in floral and fauna, there are many choices this year looks wise.
The book from which the dress code takes its title is a dystopian short story which deals with decay and destruction so although some might take the garden theme quite literally, for those who choose to be inspired by this direction need not go with the in-bloom light-hearted take on florals. They could give it a dark dystopian angle like the books. Alternatively, there are many ways to interpret the garden theme, it could be interpreted in a sexy edge. Others might choose to be inspired by gardens in unexpected ways, for instance the use of animal print or textures.
The other route to go is for attendees to wear archival or vintage inspired looks due to the issues that come with wearing archive looks. If the exhibition is looking to ‘reawaken’ as it were the sleeping beauties fashion wise that are too fragile to display in your usual ways, it would be interesting to see how this might be translated in the dress-code. And this can be done in unlimited ways.
It would also make sense for attendants to tap into to technology as we have seen on the catwalks to bring fashions to life that show an awakening in one form or the other on the Met Gala red carpet.
Whatever direction attendees choose, we are looking forward to each look. It is an exciting year for the Met as Zendaya returns to the event after a five year absence. She is hot-off of her successful Challengers the movie press tour which saw her collaborate with her long-time stylist Law Roach on a method dressing press tour wardrobe as inspired by the tennis movie. All eyes will be on the actress who since her last Met appearance has become the most anticipated actress on the red carpet.
The Met Gala red carpet can be live streamed on Vogue today Monday 6 May starting at 6pm ET (11pm BST).
