From oversized gems and sculptural piping to fresh fruit and changing shapes, cake decoration is taking a more experimental direction in 2026.
Celebration cakes are becoming increasingly decorative, with bakers using piping, embellishment and shape to create designs that go beyond the conventional iced cake.
Social media is helping these designs spread quickly. British Baker’s 2026 cake trend report also points to the continuing popularity of vintage-style piping, bold colour and playful decoration.
Bedazzled cakes
Colourful gems are turning up across buttercream cakes in different shapes and sizes. The embellishments are applied directly to the icing and mixed with piped borders, pearls and other decorative details.
Pink and white provide a common base for the look, allowing the brightly coloured stones to become the main feature. The gems can be spread across the entire cake or concentrated around individual sections of piping.

Confetti cakes
Confetti cakes cover the icing with colourful sprinkles, sugar pearls and small decorative pieces. Some designs add ribbons and piped borders, while others scatter the decoration across the entire surface.
The decoration is intentionally dense, with the mixture of colours and smaller embellishments creating the confetti effect rather than relying on one large centrepiece.

Jewellery box cakes
Jewellery box cakes take their cues from ring displays, with rows of buttercream used to hold individual jewel-like rings across the top of the cake. The rings become the main feature rather than simply being scattered across the icing.
Ornate piping continues around the sides, with pearls, beaded strands and contrasting pastel colours adding to the jewellery-inspired finish.

Lily gem cakes
Lily gem cakes combine oversized lilies with jewel embellishments. Large flowers sit above heavily textured buttercream, while individual gems are positioned across the cake and, in some designs, directly onto the petals.
Folded and waved piping adds texture to the sides, with pearls and ribbons also appearing alongside the flowers and gems.

Berry cakes
Raspberries are becoming a major part of the decoration on berry cakes rather than being used as a small finishing garnish. Some designs cover much of the top, or almost the entire cake, with fresh berries.
Other versions combine raspberries with vintage piping and additional decorative details, using the fruit as part of the overall design rather than simply adding it at the end.

Squiggle cakes
Squiggle cakes use broad, wavy bands made from closely piped lines of buttercream. The curves run across the sides and top of the cake, turning the piping itself into the main graphic element.
The squiggles can appear in contrasting colours and are often combined with smaller piped details, flowers or other decoration.

Domo cakes
Domo cakes use separate sections of textured buttercream to create sculptural shapes across the cake. Curved ridges, waves and folded sections are positioned around otherwise smooth icing rather than covering the whole surface.
Flowers and fruit are often arranged around the piped sections, adding colour while leaving the sculptural buttercream visible.

Long cakes
Long cakes move away from the familiar round shape altogether. Their elongated rectangular format creates a larger decorating surface and works particularly well for bigger celebrations.
Vintage piping can run around the entire cake, while flowers, fruit, candles and other decorations can be spread along its length rather than concentrated in the centre.

Oval cakes
Oval cakes offer another alternative to traditional round and heart-shaped designs. Their elongated surface provides more room for decorative piping across the top and around the edges.
Ruffled borders and piped details are often combined with pastel colours, flowers, ribbons or small decorative motifs, giving the cakes a distinctly vintage finish.

Rather than one dominant look, celebration cakes in 2026 are moving in several directions at once, giving bakers more ways to rethink the traditional celebration cake.
