Despite his death in 2007, Osmane is the best in Africa cinema to this date. His work is riveting, thought provoking and beautifully shot.
In ‘Black Girl’ (released in 1966) deals with colonisation, where the lead is led to believe Paris held a nanny’s role but when she arrives she is rather made a servant by her employers. She had dreamt of living a great life, getting to know Paris but that is soon dashed as she is made a servant. She is not able to dress up fancy because her ‘Madame’ says she doesn’t need those clothes in her role as maid.
Ousmane Sembene was a filmmaker giant, always telling the stories that needed to bs told and at the right time. Social documenting our times.
