Plaid Shirts Are Trending: How To Wear The Trend

Plaid Shirts Are Trending: Get The Look

Over the last decade, 90s fashion has been making its comeback. Slip dresses, leopard print everything, sports-core and even the fan favourite capri trouser have all had their moment. Now the latest 90s revival hitting the streets and runaways is the plaid shirt.

If we’re being honest, plaid shirts never really left. They’ve always been a trusty layering staple, keeping us warm when the temperatures drop. But now, its time for them to take centre stage.

We all remember the 90s grunge era: Kurt Cobain in his tee, topped with an oversized plaid flannel – a defining look of the decade. Today the trend is back, but with a more creative and chic twist.

From makeshift belts and bralettes to classic layering, there are plenty of ways to give this 90s staple a modern makeover. Here are all the ways you can relive one of the decades defining styles.

DARE TO BE BOLD

Who says you can’t mix and match? For my daring girls try mixing a classic plaid shirt with a plaid skirt. Brave, chic and alluring. This look is perfect for the office, business meetings, or whatever the hell you want, and the best thing, this look works in monochrome or an array of colours. Have fun and look amazing.

THE CLASSIC

Okay, I know I said that this trend has had a modern makeover, but in some cases you can’t be a classic. A simple plaid shirt styled with a pair of trousers and jeans, with a jacket will always be a look. Sometimes simple is better, a look for the everyday errand and one that can never let you down.

THE COBAIN

If it aint broke dont fix it. The 90s grunge look was and still is a staple look, synonymous with Kurt Cobain’s signature look and can be dressed up or down depending on vibe and occasion. Grab any flannel and wear it over a graphic tee with a pair of trousers or shorts, even a skirt and a chunky belt for that perfect 90s grunge look.

SHOW A LITTLE SKIN

Just because the sun’s gone doesn’t mean you can’t show a little flesh. If you’re brave enough to still show a little skin or you’re not quite ready to let go of summer, a cropped moment will never let you down. Paired with any bottoms this look is simple, cute, and easy. What’s not to love? For a more relaxed look, undo the top buttons. If you’re after something more sophisticated or put together, add a tie; plaid or plain, whatever you want.

LAYER, LAYER, LAYER

As the temp starts to drop, jumpers and jackets are starting to make their way from the back of the wardrobe front and centre as we prepare to brave the cold. If you’re a fan of creative layering or you’re just not quite ready to cover up everything, then playful layering will be your new best friend. A cute jumper over a plaid shirt, a cute plaid belt, tied around your waste, draped over your shoulders, pretty much anything. Layering will make any fit look fabulous.

MAXIMALISM

For my maximalist girls mixing and matching different styles of plaid is a stunning way to elevate any look. Acne Studios Fall/Winter 26 collection displays an array of plaid looks and styling, from the everyday look, to office wear, and going out looks. Every now and again it’s fun to throw out the rule book and experiment.

Now I’m aware that I’ve thrown a lot of information at you, and you may even feel more lost than when you began reading. Don’t worry I’m not going to leave you alone, I’ve shown you the many ways to style this garment, now I’m going to help you source some pieces. Below is a list of some plaid shirts you need to add to your collection, from the high street to designer, I’ve got you covered.
