Top 5 Tips On How to Discover Your Personal Style With Hellana Mardasian

We are well into Spring and with the new season you might want a style reset. For those who do not know what pieces to invest in because they are not quite sure what their style is, a great place to start would be to discover what their personal style is. In a bid to help you to do this we spoke to personal stylist Hellana Mardasian of Styled By Hellana on her 5 top tips on how to discover ones style. Hellana, a London-based personal stylist, with over a decade of industry experience embarked on her career journey as a model before transitioning into the realm of personal styling. After earning her qualifications, she refined her expertise at Harrods, styling clients with precision and flair. Today, she’s committed to empowering women of all ages, guiding them to discover their personal style, curate their wardrobes, and exude confidence in their everyday and event attire.

We spoke to her about how to best discover your style. These are her top 5 tips…

1. First and foremost, Identifying and dressing for your Bodyshape

Whilst it can be great to look to others for style inspiration, it’s important to remember that whilst an outfit may look good on someone in a magazine, or on Instagram, if they have a different bodyshape , it’s not going to look the same on you. Once you have a good understanding of your Bodyshape, you can find pieces that highlight your assets, and minimise your least favourite parts by way of dressing.

2. Getting a professional Colour Analysis

This is a great way to help you define your personal style and create a capsule wardrobe, and is a game-changer for helping you shop. Knowing your Seasonal Colour Palette is a powerful tool that helps you to streamline your wardrobe and eliminating pieces in colours that don’t suit your overall tones (skin, hair and eyes ). Once you are armed with this information, you can eliminate shopping for pieces that look good on the hanger, but not-so-good on you. Wearing the ‘wrong’ colours for you will highlight all your imperfections, making you look tired, and your skin look dull. Wearing your ‘power’ colours, will brighten up your complexion, add a sparkle to your eyes, and make you look vibrant and the best version of yourself.

3. Lifestyle

Are you running around all day? Have young children? Sitting at a desk most of the day? It’s important to factor in your day to day activities and the how the comfort and practicality of what you wear will fit into that. There is no point in having a wardrobe full of heels when you need to be on your feet all day and moving from a to b and so forth.

4. Create a Moodboard

This is a fun exercise to help you define your style preferences and the way in which you want the outside world to see you. A great way to do this is on Pinterest or Canva, making a moodboard of images the fit the aesthetic you most love and feel best represents your character. They don’t all have to be related to fashion; you could have pictures of some of your favourite locations, flowers, hobbies, prints, photographs. Once you have collated these images, try to pick out 3 keywords from the board that you would like your style to be described as when entering into a room for the first time. When you next go shopping, ask yourself if the piece you are contemplating buying fits into those 3 key words.

5. Experiment and Have Fun

One of the best ways you discover your personal style is by experimenting and trying different styles of clothes, and finding what resonates best with you. Go to the shops, try things on , host an evening with friends where you trade clothes, re-style pieces from your current wardrobe. Something I like to do is create a new rail from my existing wardrobe, and I will spend an evening coming up with new ways in which to style the pieces I already own, creating new looks from what I already have. Take photos of these, and store them in your phone library for when you are short on time and don’t know what to wear.
