Embroidered opera coats are returning to fashion for autumn/winter 2026, bringing decorative fabrics, sweeping silhouettes and elaborate trims into the spotlight. Traditionally worn over evening gowns, these coats are now being styled with denim, tailored separates and simple dresses. Their appeal lies in the contrast between intricate craftsmanship and the ease of contemporary dressing.
The revival forms part of a wider move towards decorative outerwear, with embroidery, textured fabrics and statement silhouettes offering an alternative to conventional winter coats.
Conner Ives has been central to the revival. His vintage-inspired coats, made using repurposed textiles and decorative trims, have attracted attention well beyond the runway. Kate Moss, Jennifer Lawrence, Sienna Miller and Hailey Bieber have all worn his designs, while his autumn/winter 2026 collection continued to explore the relationship between elaborate outerwear and casual clothing.

The trend extends beyond one designer. Erdem’s autumn/winter 2026 collection explored floral threadwork and embroidered textiles, while other contemporary labels have introduced coats and jackets with similarly decorative finishes. Unlike conventional wool outerwear, these pieces are designed to draw attention to the surface of the garment, whether through stitched florals, beading or carefully placed embellishment.
At Erdem, floral embroidery appears on tailored wool as well as satin, demonstrating how the same decorative approach can work across different fabrics. The label’s embroidered heavy satin coat uses crystals and silver beads to form floral motifs, while its wool designs bring threadwork into more structured silhouettes. The house’s official autumn/winter 2026 collection provides a closer look at the season’s textile work and designs.

Celebrity styling has helped move the opera coat beyond its traditional association with formal occasions. Kate Moss has worn a decorative Conner Ives coat with jeans, demonstrating how a richly detailed outer layer can transform an otherwise simple outfit. Jennifer Lawrence has taken a more formal approach, wearing one of the designer’s floral coats over an evening gown. Moss’s styling was also covered by British Vogue.

The decorative quality of these coats makes them particularly relevant to winter occasionwear. Floral embroidery and elaborate trims provide the detail that might otherwise come from a statement dress, while the generous silhouette allows the coat to sit comfortably over simpler clothing. For designers working with vintage textiles, variations in pattern and construction can also give individual pieces a distinctive character.
Contemporary interpretations offer different proportions. RIXO’s Micah jacket uses white floral embroidery and faux-fur trims on a shorter, kimono-inspired silhouette. Hayley Menzies’ Olsen Satin Coat offers a longer alternative, combining embroidered florals with quilted satin and substantial faux-fur detailing.

How to Wear an Embroidered Opera Coat
The simplest approach is to keep the clothing underneath understated. Straight-leg jeans and a plain top provide a casual contrast to a heavily embroidered coat, while a silk slip dress or tailored trousers create a more formal outfit. Accessories can remain minimal, allowing the embroidery and silhouette to provide the main detail.
Longer designs retain the dramatic proportions of traditional opera dressing, making them particularly effective over eveningwear. Shorter embroidered jackets offer greater flexibility for daytime outfits. A boxy silhouette can be paired with denim or a fitted skirt, while a more fluid satin coat works with streamlined dresses and trousers. For another approach to statement dressing, STORY’s royal purple autumn colour report explores how a strong colour can work with familiar wardrobe pieces.
For a more substantial winter option, embroidered wool and suede offer alternatives to silk and satin. RIXO’s Mairan coat draws on 1970s Afghan-coat styling, combining suede, floral embroidery and shearling trims. Zara’s limited-edition beaded coat takes a more structured approach, using a wool-blend fabric with decorative appliqué and a contrasting velvet collar.
