The Jellyfish Haircut With Cos Sakkas Toni&Guy Global Creative Director

At the Grammys this year one of the biggest beauty trends was the divisive Jellyfish haircut. If you are not familiar with this cut, it is the combination of a bob with very long layers. With ones hair pulled back the hairstyle looks like a straight-up bob but it is actually bob choppy layers that frame around the face with a second layer of super long hair. Celebrities are loving this look. On the Grammys redcarpet Billie Eilish had the longer layers of her Jellyfish cut tucked into her hat at the back. Two other celebrities that sported this cut that night were Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga.
There a lot that is being said about this cut at present with many either strongly for or against it but this is not the first time that the Jellyfish cut has been in the limelight. Last year it was all the rage trending on TikTok with celebrities like Lizzo and Zendaya sporting the look. It looks like the Jellyfish is not going away.
If you wanted to know all there is to the Jellyfish cut today we speak to award winning British hairdresser Cos Sakkas.
Cos Sakkas who is TONI&GUY Global Creative Director has won British hairdresser of the Year three-times (three years running). He was the perfect expert to answer all our questions about this haircut. This is what you need to know…
What characteristics make the jellyfish haircut? Look, shape and technique-wise.
The Jellyfish is a bolder version of the Mullet – more disconnection, texture and a fresh feel than the Mullet haircut. The style is two haircuts in one – the top mimics the shape of a jellyfish with the outer layer hugging the shape of the head while the lower layer can be as long or as short as you want it to be. It looks like a bowl cut with tentacles! It’s quite low maintenance and can be as textured and chopping or smooth as you want it to be.
Who do you think the haircut suits? Any particular hair types or face shapes?
This haircut is great for anyone that wants to make a statement – think Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus – have something bespoke or are looking for something a bit more adventurous. It’s also great if you want something a big different but don’t want to lose the length! The Jellyfish haircut suits most hair types, especially medium to think hair; fine hair may not hold the shape as well. For face shapes, it suits everyone, particularly those with round or diamond faces. For a round face, make sure the layers sit above your chin, while a longer face the layers can sit below the jawline.
What hair types wouldn’t the haircut suit?
It’s a great haircut for all hair types, it’s the disconnected layers that give it its shape. It can be worn wavy, curly or straight as long as it looks full and voluminous. Always take pictures to show your stylist so you can discuss how short to go and the best texture for you.
