MARGOT ROBBIE AND MORGAN FREEMAN OSCARS 2023
As the Oscars 2024 is about to be unfurled with multitude of glitz, creativity and recognizing talents, it is also anticipating the voices of the unheard through protests, controversy, and politics. Oscars, 2024 is taking place right in the heart of Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. A cut-throat competition can be witnessed between box-office rivals: Oppenheimer and Barbie competing for “Best Picture”. Previous year both the films gathered galore both by audiences and critiques where the overtly appropriate buzz word “Barbenheimer” created headlines of meme pages. Both have continued to enjoy the craze and momentum in 2023, hence going into Oscars for the final verdict: Oppenheimer with 13 nominations and Barbie with 8. Other extraordinary films like “The zone of interest”, “Past Lives”, “Poor Things”, “Anatomy of a fall”, “American Fiction” are making their way for the golden statue for the “Best Picture” as well.
However, Oppenheimer, with its taste of Science and politics is expected to dominate categories and hold the golden status for Best Picture and Best Director, meanwhile Barbie with its message of celebrating unconventional beauty and woman empowerment thus being the highest grossing film in 2023, worldwide has been nominated for Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor while rebuffing the well deserving “Best Actress” and “Best Director”. As Ryan Gosling said “There’s no Ken without the Brabie” when it comes to Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig for “Best Actress” and “Best Director” respectively.
Legendary director Martin Scorsese is in the competition with Killers of the Flower Moon, which is based on the real-life story of a killing spree that targeted the Osage Nation in the 1920s.Fellow auteur Yorgos Lanthimos is back in the race for Golden statue as well with his movie: Poor Things, which is based on a feminist-inspired Frankenstein tale with steampunk core aesthetics and fashion. Poor Things has been in 11 nominations, and Killers of the Flower Moon 10 as well.
As the remarkable historic win and moment is going to be created as member of the Nez Perce and Blackfeet nations, Gladstone is the first Native American to be nominated in the “Best Actress” category. The film also received appreciation for its original music, which featured Indigenous artists. Osage Nation member Scott George received the first Native American nomination for “Best Song”, and the late composer Robbie Robertson, is the first Indigenous person to be nominated for “Best Original Score”.
The social satire with the fun-banter “American Fiction” also has its first nomination. The
future of Oscars is rewriting its own history with never seen before nominations where two Black men from the same film received acting nods. Stars Jeffrey Wright and Sterling K Brown are honoured in the “Best Actor” and “Best Supporting Actor” categories, respectively. Furthermore, Colman Domingo, the star of the civil rights biopic “Rustin”, marked its name in the history of the Academy awards as well by becoming the first Afro-Latino man to score a Best Actor nod.
This year marks the celebration of woman empowerment and recognition of women in creative arts field and direction with the first time three woman-directed films landing Best Picture” recognition which includes Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall”, Celine Song’s “Past Lives” and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie”.
